I am looking forward to the upcoming US Open more than any I can remember in the last five years. Our National Championship has always been one of my favorite tournaments of the year. But frankly, after last year’s edition where a controversial venue (Chambers Bay) was nearly as big a story as Jordan Spieth’s dramatic victory, the event could use a rejuvenation. Given the 2016 US Open’s return to iconic Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, this is the year for the USGA to do just that!
One of the key ingredients in any great tournament or championship, is its personality…lead by The Masters. History shows that the US Open was played on many of America’s best courses and had the reputation of being the most grueling, thorough and difficult tests in championship golf. Going back to Oakmont, which has hosted more US Open’s than any other venue in our country, allows the USGA to showcase the real personality of the championship. I believe this is going to be more of a classic US Open and for the world’s best players it is not going to be much fun…it’s not supposed to be.
