Since its inception back in 2007, the PGA Tour’s season ending FedEx Cup Playoffs, has slowly, but continually, gained traction amongst the players, fans and media. Still, however, it pales in comparison to the impact of playoffs in the other major sports such as the NFL, NBA, MLB and even NHL. While I am a fan of the FedEx Cup Playoffs concept, I feel that a few tweaks and adjustments could add to the intrigue, excitement, and popularity of the event. Here are some possibilities:
- As in playoffs in the other sports, require all the players to participate in every playoff event, in order to be eligible to move on.
- Reduce the number of Playoff events from the current four to three. This could put more emphasis on the regular season and make it possible to have only a three-week window necessary for the post season.
- Finish the Playoffs and PGA Tour season on Labor Day Weekend, prior to the start of the NFL season.
- Rotate occasionally to a West Coast site for one of the three events to allow for a live in prime time telecast, which would increase the audience and broaden the amount of exposure.
- Adjust the format of the final Playoff event to include some portion of knock-out or match-play, to create more excitement with a sense of urgency and “win or go home” element.
