Over the past few years, we have seen an amazing proliferation of very young and talented American players burst on to the PGA Tour scene and immediately make a huge impact. It is clear that in American golf today, the torch is being passed from the group of middle-aged superstars lead by Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to a group of young phenoms lead by Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.
Today in the final round of the Honda Classic, I followed one of these youngsters, whose name has rarely been mentioned in the same context as Spieth, Reed, Justin Thomas, and others…but in the end he may turn out to be just as good as any of them. Daniel Berger is 21 years old…tall, lanky and hits the ball a mile….has a wonderful short game…and is a really nice young man….wow! What a combination…. Unbelievably, Daniel entered the final round trailing the leader by a whopping nine strokes. After a brilliant closing round of 64, Daniel found himself in a sudden death playoff with Padraig Harrington, which he lost on the second hole. This may be the first time many of you have heard the name Daniel Berger, but this is only the beginning. I expect him in the PGA Tour’s winner’s circle before the year is over. This kid is good…
