Kapalua Bay and Plantation Courses have retained their designation as “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program for golf courses, an Audubon International program. Both courses were originally selected as Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries in 1993 and 1994 respectively, they are among 912 courses in the world to be designated as such.
To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation and Water Quality Management. Courses go through a recertification process every three years. Kauai Lagoons Golf Club is the only other Hawaii course to be designated a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
