Ocean conditions around the Hawaiian Islands vary according to seasons, weather and location. When you visit a beach please keep the following tips in mind to help you have a safe experience..

First… Minimize your risk
It is best to swim in areas where lifeguards are present, you can consult them before going into the water. Many ocean related accidents are cause by …a lack of understanding that the shoreline can be dangerous and a lack of caution.

Second…Learn the conditions. Find out about surf and wind conditions for the day and check on:

  • Strong currents and waves that surge up beaches
  • High Surf
  • Waves that break directly on the shore (shore break)
  • Hidden rocks
  • Dangerous shore areas
  • Pay attention to the posted Beach Warning signs & flags.

Before entering the water remember to SOAK:

  • Study the conditions before entering the water
  • Observe the activities of other in the ocean
  • Ask the lifeguards about current conditions
  • Know you limits in the water
