Most of you would not automatically think of cattle ranching and cowboys when you contemplate Hawaii. But in the cool uplands of Hawaii Island in Waimea and North Kohala you will find just that… a “cowboy culture” that is more than a century old.
Though Parker Ranch was the genesis of Hawaii Island’s cattle ranching back in the 1800’s and grew to be one of the world’s largest privately owned cattle ranches, the cowboy heritage continues today. You can tour Anna Ranch or Paniolo Adventures in the upcountry pastures of Hawaii’s Big Island. Today’s paniolo often use all terrain vehicles (ATV’s) in open country but you can still go horseback riding and explore the beautiful landscapes of Waimea on horseback or on ATV’s.
