Most middle and high handicap golfers have difficulty with long-range putts particularly on sloping greens, which you will certainly encounter in Hawaii. A 3 or 4 putt green is one of the most challenging things for any golfer to deal with mentally. The biggest mistake I see many golfers make on long putts is spending too much time trying to read the break of the putt and not enough time trying to get the right distance control. Think about it … how many times do you three putt because you’ve missed the first putt way left or way right of the hole? Rarely! It’s almost always caused because you’ve hit the first putt past the hole or more commonly come up well short. With long putts spend less time reading the line and more time reading the distance … and you’ll have fewer three putts.
