Rickie Fowler is The Players Champion and I couldn’t be happier…and I’m sure neither can he. It was a performance for the ages and certainly one of the greatest finishes to a golf tournament that I have ever seen. Rickie played the final four holes in regulation in a total of 11 strokes…birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, and then out dueled Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner in a pressure packed, four hole playoff. And all this happened on one of the most iconic arenas in golf, in an atmosphere that was as electric and loud as I have ever experienced. It was one of my favorite days ever in championship golf.
For Rickie Fowler, the week did not start out quite as,well as it ended. News had broken, that in an anonymous survey of PGA Tour players, he and Ian Poulter had been voted as the two most overrated players in golf. Rickie took it hard… But ultimately I believe, used it as motivation.
Rickie is not only an excellent golfer and The Players champion, he is a fine young man….humble…caring and much more. To me, equally as impressive as his shotmaking today was the way he handled his post round interviews Time and time again he was asked about the poll. Each time, he had the opportunity to take his victory and rub it in the voters faces, or even offer up just a few”I told you so’s”. He never did….and that says a lot, about Rickie Fowler.
