It’s official: when it comes to the Ryder Cup, the U.S. has hit the reset button…starting over…wiped the slate clean. With Tuesday’s announcement by the PGA of America and the somewhat controversial Ryder Cup Task Force, the U.S. side now has a clear path toward reversing the ugly trend of having won only two of the last ten Ryder Cups. And I believe the wholesale changes that are going to unfold not only for the 2016 Ryder Cup, but for the next 20 years, are going to put the U.S. team in a much better position to halt the European dominance.
Many are already questioning the logic of bringing back a captain (Davis Love III) that was on the losing side of one of those Ryder Cups, I think it is a great decision. I believe Davis learned a lot from his 2012 Medinah experience, and in his own words, will be a “different captain with the same goal”. Davis is also a very good listener, which will be critical in the new “collective effort” system that the US has created. Having Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods on the newly formed, 6 person Ryder Cup committee won’t hurt either.
Stay tuned…because the Road to the Ryder Cup starts right now for the U.S…which is much sooner than it has ever started before.
