Back in the 60’s there was a “BIG Three” of golf and they were … Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Today, for really the first time we have another Big Three in men’s golf… Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Rory McIlroy. Clearly these are the three best players in the golf as we enter 2016.
The interesting thing about today’s “Big Three”, which has only been in effect for the last six months, is that like Palmer, Nicklaus and Player, Speith, Day and McIlroy have clearly separated themselves from the rest of the field. Back in the day of the original “Big Three” there were a number of high profile players that nipped at their heels for several decades. Watson, Trevino, Miller, Weiskopf, Casper… but none were ever truly able to crack into that original elite club. Today, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and several others are consistently threatening to break into today’s exclusive club of Speith, Day and McIlroy. Will they or some other player be able to do it in the fairly near future? I say the answer is yes. The playing field of today is much more level and many more players can win in any given week. We will never again see the domination of a “BIG Three” like Arnie, Jack and Gary.
