As many of you know, two months ago, I was diagnosed with a rare form of salivary gland cancer that had shown no symptoms until the first of July. On August 13, I underwent a successful surgical procedure to remove the cancerous tumor from my left cheek area. Since then, I have been steadily recovering from the surgery and gaining strength to prepare for the second phase of treatment, which will be a six-week series of proton radiation therapy at the world renowned MD Anderson Center in Houston, Texas.
I am pleased to report that the medical team at MD Anderson is quite optimistic as we enter this second phase. The cancer has not metasticized and is confined to the original area below my left ear. Consequently, the highly efficient proton radiation methodology should be very effective in eradicating any possible remnants of the cancer that were not removed from the surgery. I feel really good about the prospects, and fully intend to be back with my NBC/Golf Channel broadcast team, starting with the January 2016 Hyundai Tournament of Champions on Maui! Thanks so much for the warm wave of encouraging vibes you have been sending my way!
