The decade of golf development on Hawaii Island in the 1980’s belonged to Waikoloa. Robert Trent Jones Jr., the son of the legendary architect, kicked it off with the beautiful, and user-friendly Beach Course, which winds it’s way through the resort and touches the sea at one of my favorite par fives in the Islands, #7. While the Waikoloa Beach Course is not overly long, it provides a terrific test for golfers of any skill level , and is just plain fun to play.
Waikoloa’s sister course to The Beach, is The King’s….and it is a really good one. ITom Weiskopf and Jay Moorish created a masterful layout that is completely different in style and character. The holes are dramatic…the views stunning…and the shot values very high. There are a number of Weiskopf signature element sprinkled throughout the course, including my favorite, the drivable par-4, fifth hole.
The Waikoloa Beach Resort is truly an adventure land with all kinds of activities…but don’t overlook the golf….it is really good.
